Road To Bonnaroo 2011: Uncle Skeleton

Uncle Skeleton

Uncle Skeleton is the brainchild of Ross Wariner – once best known as half of the Nashville, TN band Kindercastle. Finding himself with a overflowing myriad of ideas and an overactive drive to try them all out, Pancho Chumley was born.
Shortly thereafter REMIX was compiled by a host of friends to re-interpret the potential of the record. The results were all over the map – in a good way.
In late May 2010, Warm Under the Covers was released. The twelve track album takes the next logical progression beyond Pancho Chumley. Best experienced in its analog vinyl form the album is divided into equal halves creating an ambient, perfect for summer, dual soundscapes.

Road To Bonnaroo 2011: Tallest Trees

Tallest Trees

Tallest Trees is the Nashville-based duo of Thomas “Trees” Samuel and Dabney “Voice” Morris. Their full length debut, The Ostrich or the Lark, is something they’ve been growing for some time.  This growth is stunningly documented by the sounds of the album - simple secrets conveyed through intentionally misplaced instruments, clashing harmonies, multidimensional arrangements and elements out of character, playing atypical melodic/rhythmic roles. But all the while, a firm root in pop-arrangement is maintained. It’s kind of like “listening” to your little brother’s coloring book — lots of colors, most of them outside the lines, and the occasional slightly demented editing to the characters, but, for some reason, all the dogs and birds look normal.

Road To Bonnaroo 2011: Sarah Silva

Sarah Silva

Listen to the music of singer/songwriter Sarah Silva and you’ll immediately know three things: who she is, where she’s been and where she’s going. The small town girl with the big voice makes no qualms about infusing past, present and future into her lyrical storytelling, and from the moment she instigates the listener, it isn’t hard to figure out what has shaped her as an artist.

The texture of Silva’s music is made up of a little pop here, some rock there, a refreshing amount of soul and just enough Freddie Mercury theatrics- all appropriate considering her varied upbringing in Fort Smith, Arkansas. At the same time, Sarah has always indulged herself in the music of those artists who still remain idols: Whitney, Ella, Ann Wilson— all defining female vocalists.

Now in Nashville, Tennessee, Silva is taking what she knows as an artist to the city’s ever-thriving music scene, allowing the eclectic mix of genres that sculpt the city’s sound to equally influence her own composition and vocals. In a town as musically multifarious as Nashville, Silva has found the perfect haven for invention and inspiration.

For Sarah Silva, time has brought not only a maturity of self but also a maturity of music, with all of her influences—and even criticisms—serving to only enhance her style. Whether she is playfully poking piano chords, trolling about past loves, or screaming out that powerful voice, we know Sarah Silva is putting every trial, tribulation, triumph and tribute behind the words; and I, for one, understand exactly where she’s coming from.

Road To Bonnaroo 2011: PUJOL

PUJOL

Pujol was raised in Tullahoma, TN where he lived in a haunted house which sat one block away from the wrong side of the tracks. He spent his formative years scribbling on walls, shredding behind closed doors, and riding around in cars with older kids. He took his first communion at 13 and secretly drank his first beer shortly thereafter in St. Cecilia’s bathroom, emerging an identity-inclusive Peter Panentheist. When asked at the tender age of 4 what he wanted to be when he grew up, he responded, “Naked.” While Pujol has yet to achieve this particular goal he has made good on several other promises, becoming an accomplished musician, author, and songwriter. He has even dabbled in theatre, playing The Robot in a high school production of The Canterbury Tales. He is also a prominent social critic, shreditorialist, unlicensed metaphysician, and polymathmagician. Some journalists have called Pujol the Philosopher King of the Nashville scene, and while he shies away from such lofty titles and burning windmills, he totally digs the literary allusion, as does his moms.

Road To Bonnaroo 2011: The Kingston Springs

The Kingston Springs

Not a lot of people can say that after high school they were releasing a highly recognized EP, performing at Starry Nights Music Festival with Keller Williams and Cage the Elephant, and getting airtime on Nashville’s Lightening 100. The Kingston Springs from (you guessed it) Kingston Springs, are doing much more than chasing girls these days. With a phenomenal performance at Next Big Nashville 2010, TKS is successfully winning crowds over playing at the top of bills around town. Their latest EP ,’Vacation Time’, has created quite the buzz not only amongst fans, but industry executives as well. An original sound with older influences, these young men have got it nailed. A west coast feel with classic rock roots, their solid rhythm section (Alexander Geddes, bass; Mattew DeMaio, drums) allows singer Ian Ferguson to show off his pristine and downright catchy vocals. Accompanied by James Guldry (guitar, keys, horn, ‘utility man’) the boys have mastered dreamlike harmonies and clever instrumental breakdowns. Their collaborative method to songwriting has given their performances and EP a cohesively unique energy, resulting in a group that just likes to have fun. From stage presence to sound, musicality to charm, The Kingston Springs are well on their way to the top - and by the looks of things are here to stay.

Road To Bonnaroo 2011: The Clutters

The Clutters

Pure, unmitigated rock n roll fury – not exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Nashville, right? Ten years ago, when The Clutters first exploded onto the scene, there was a lot of head scratching – so this is rock n roll, eh? Five years ago, when The Clutters debut T&C hit, it pretty much exploded the “rock free Music City” myth and now, ten years after their genesis and on the eve of  their 3rd album, Breaking Bones, Nashville has become an epicenter for the rawest of rock n roll. Coincidence? Probably not. The Clutters might not take credit for the path they blazed, but they blazed it none the less.

Breaking Bones find The Clutters – vocalist/guitarist Doug Lehmann, bass player Jake Rosswog, drummer Stephanie Brush and keyboardist Andrew Higley – raising the bar for rock n roll once again with twelve tracks that land somewhere between Vanilla Fudge and the Voidoids, AC/DC and the Animals. From the opening fuzz of “Finer Things” to the final sustain of “There Is No We In I”, The Clutters barrel through the rock pantheon with a punk rock propulsion and the belligerence of Bon Scott, leaving no ass un-shook and no fist un-pimped. “I’m Bitter”, “Our World is Gone” and “More”? All anthems for an unemployed, unloved and unsatisfied America.

Produced by Lehmann, and recorded by Joe Costa (Ben Folds, The Greenhornes, Brendan Benson) Breaking Bones pulls no punches and makes no apologies. No concessions are made to decorum, no acknowledgment made of the delicate sensibilities that have sucked the fun out independent music over the last decade. No this, this is hyphen-free rock n roll – all energy, no bullshit. They were bored, now they’re angry, they’ve had more than their share of pain – as the song goes – and it all comes screaming out of your speakers, smashing your brain into little tiny bits. The Clutters may be a little bit older but they are louder and snottier than ever, kicking ass and Breaking Bones.
